Chris Rock’s mother Rose had an unfortunate time at a Cracker Barrel restaurant along the South Carolina coast. Rose was seated at the Southern restaurant, but ignored for more than half an hour before she was even attended to by a waiter.
Rock says she intends to sue the Lebanon, Tennessee-based company, while a Cracker Barrel spokeswoman said the restaurant chain was researching the complaint & taking it all ”very seriously.”
In the past the Cracker has faced several lawsuits over complaints of refusing to serve black customers, being discriminatory against minority workers and showing gay employees to the door (with a swift kick).
Rose was with her 21-year-old daughter when the incident occurred, she stated that when she asked the manager about the delay in service, he only said they could have their meals on the house.
Rock says, “He never called over the waitresses and asked, `Why did these people sit here for an hour without service?”
“The only thing he said was we could have a free meal and neither of us wanted to eat.”
The Reverend Al Sharpton (you knew he’d been in here someplace) will join Rock today in South Carolina to announce that Sharpton’s Action Network will be financing the discrimination lawsuit.
I’m getting reports from all over the country about Cracker Barrel,” Sharpton said Tuesday.
“When people are talking about there is no more discrimination, a lot of it is because they are not following this stuff up,” Sharpton said.
Well, it looks like Rose has a good case & we wish her luck in her pursuit.

I wasn’t there so I can’t say one way or the other, whether Rose Rock, in her particular situation with those particular people, was discriminated against or not. . . HOWEVER, these types of things (being seated and then not being served, being served food and the waitress never returns to check-up on us, etc.) have happened to me on many more occasions than I care to remember throughout my 37 years.
If you eat out frequently enough, it is bound to happen sometime, ESPECIALLY in places like Cracker Barrel, Flying J Travel Plazas, and like establishments that cater to LARGE numbers of travelers each day. I mean, let’s face it, if you want EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE, you don’t go looking for it at a Cracker Barrel.
Should she have complained? ABSOLUTELY!!! It was unacceptable to have to wait that long, but my questions are:
Why did she wait 30 minutes to bring it to the manager’s attention? Their job is to make sure that things are running smoothly, but they can’t do anything if they don’t know. If more than 3 minutes pass and I haven’t been greeted, I’m flagging down the nearest waitress, or I’m at the hostess stand and ASKING for a manager.
Was an offer of a free meal satisfactory? Well, what else could he offer her? I doubt he had any other remedy other than making it right and making it free. Sounds generous enough to me. (managers customarily give discounts, free dessert, free meals to remedy bad experiences.)
Was Ms. Rock expecting him to verbally reprimand the server who “dropped the ball” out in public? If THAT would have made things right, then I venture to say that we are looking at a power trip. But let’s just say that he HAD disciplined the waitress in front of the customer . . . that would DEFINITELY be a NO NO. EVERYONE deserves to be treated with dignity and that doesn’t change just because one makes a mistake. HELLOOOOOOOOOOO PEOPLE.
COME ON!!! Bad service HAPPENS!!! Complain and MOVE ON!! If it was that bad, don’t go back.
With that said, if some jury finds that the reason Ms. Rock received bad service then I am going to go out in search of a clever attorney who can figure a way to get me a large settlement every time I have to wait too because as a white woman, I’m not entitled a to race card . . . which I think is discriminatory!!!

Actually, Michelle, it’s not a race card and stop using this as a chance to complain. I didn’t read anything about race in this article. They didn’t even say what the waitress looked like. Maybe the waitress was fat and didn’t want to serve Rose because she was thin. Maybe the waitress was young and didn’t want to serve Rose because she looked old(er). Who knows? You said as a white woman you are not entitled to a race card. But you’re not a white man- you’re still a woman or have you forgotten? Play the gender card and shut up.

ok…I own a restaurant and this is just Fu@king stupid….you can try as hard as you want but sometimes things happen and people get missed. That sounds exactly what happened here….
the fact that Al Sharpton is involved is just renforcing the point that this is a stupid case and that it is all about the black person that got their feelings hurt. Racism is a real problem and needs to be addressed when it happens, but that is not what happened here.
It sounds like Mrs. Rock did not get the instant attention she is used to getting because of her son and got mad…I mean honestly Chris rock is halirous and would get great attention in my place…his mom..I could not give 2 shits about…she isn’t funny or famous. Quit playing off your sons fame and get a life of your own…
