Steve Irwin Kids Show & Stingray Warning Before Death

steve-irwin.jpgWith more news surrounding the tragic death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, I thought we’d do an update.  OK, I have a soft spot for the guy, it was a better world with him in it, than out of it.  I promise, no more after this one.

It looks like Irwin was trying to get a quick shot with him around the Australian Great Barrier Reef to help his eight-year-old daughter Bindi’s TV show. Bindi is to star in a new show for the Discovery Kids channel next year & Steve wanted to take the opportunity to give her a few good underwater shots.

Steve was co-hosting an Animal Planer special called The Ocean’s Deadliest with famed oceanographer Philippe Cousteau when Irwin took a break from filming to do a special piece for his daughter’s show.

His manager John Stainton explains, “His daughter’s doing a new show for Discovery Kids next year and wherever we get the opportunity we pick up quick little stories with Steve for her.

“He said, ‘I’ll just take the rubber duckie and go out and see if we can get some coral and fish and rays and stuff like that–just to do a soft segment for kids.’

“I saw him go off, he had the crew and the boat crew in with him and a cameraman… The next thing we heard this call coming in out of the ship’s radio that there’d been an emergency.

“It was a blur as to what was happening, I didn’t know who was hurt. I obviously did not think it was Steve. I thought he was invincible.

“In my heart, I think he was dead when he was in the rubber duckie, I don’t think he was alive.”

Sadly enough, conservationalist & naturalist Steve Irwin was given a warning about the dangers of stingrays & their barbed tails the day before he himself suffered a bard to the heart & died.

Irwin & Stainton were aboard Steve’s boat Croc One when an expert from a nearby university lectured the crew about ray safety.

The sad, sad irony- which wasn’t lost on Stainton, “He was very used to them and in a lot of parts of the world tourists go into the water and hand feed them and let them crawl over them.

“It was only the day before with Jamie, our doctor that was onboard–who’s an expert from the University of James Cook Union North Queensland–that we talked about stingrays and the effect of the barb.

“It was so ironic that we would actually have this conversation the day before (he died). I related a story where a friend of mine had got a barb through his leg.”

Poor chap.

Steve Irwin Death Footage May Be Broadcast

steve-irwin.jpgThe footage of the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's death may be broadcast on TV.  The charismatic Australian naturalist died Monday after receiving a poisonous stingray barb to the chest while diving off the Great Barrier Reef.

Steve was filming for a new documentary he was working on with his eight-year-old daughter Bindi.  While snorkeling & filming, a stingray felt nervous between a too-close cameraman and Irwin and released its poisonous barbed tail on Steve.  The cameraman was still shooting when the barb went through Irwin's heart, when he pulled out the barb as well as when Steve lost consciousness forever.

The tapes are still being held by Queensland police, but Irwin's family is determined to respect Steve's last wishes and allow the footage to be broadcast.

Irwin once stated, "My number one rule is to keep that camera rolling. Even if it's shaky or slightly out of focus, I don't give a rip.

"Even if a big old alligator is chewing me up I want to go down and go, 'Crikey!' just before I die. That would be the ultimate for me."

An source reported, "This is exactly what Steve would have wanted. He knew the dangers and was totally up for the cameras to get everything."

I guess, all-in-all, it makes sense for Steve to go out on TV.  It seems fitting for his exuberant, unrelenting way of life, the poor loon.

‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin Died Monday

steve-irwin-terri.jpgCrikey, we lost a good one Monday.  Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin died Monday while filming a new underwater wildlife project he was making with his 8-year-old daughter Bindi.

Irwin, who was snorkeling off the coast of Queensland, was fatally wounded by a stingray's poisonous barb.  The last footage of the wildlife enthusiast's life was pulling the poisonous barb from his chest just moments before losing consciousness forever.

Irwin's manager and producer John Stainton described the footage, which he had seen, as "shocking.''

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone,'' Stainton reported.

"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down,'' Stainton said.

Queensland Police Superintendent Michael Keating stated there was no evidence that Irwin threatened or intimidated the stingray, who is normally a placid species that only produces its poisonous tail spines as a defense.

Keating went on to state to the media, "There are no suspicious circumstances in relation to the death.''

Experts are now speculating that the last animal Irwin knew probably felt trapped between the cameraman & the Crocodile Hunter.

Manager Stainton said Steve was at home in the bushland, but that he & Irwin had talked about the sea posing threats Irwin was unaccustomed to.

"If ever he was going to go, we always said it was going to be the ocean,'' Stainton said.

"On land he was agile, quick-thinking, quick-moving and the ocean puts another element there that you have no control over.''

Queensland state Premier Peter Beattie is offering Irwin's family a state funeral for Steve, who described him as the best known Australian in the world.

Irwin is survived by his American wife Terri, his 8-year-old daughter Bindi Sue & his 3-year-old son Bob.

Russel Crowe, who had recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, with Steve Irwin stated, "He was and remains the ultimate wildlife warrior.  He touched my heart, I believed in him, I'll miss him. I loved him and I'll be there for his family."

You gotta love a world with someone the likes of Steve Irwin in it, I will miss his antics & be a little sad that he couldn't grow old & tell tall tales to his grandchildren.

Never Fear, Foo Fighters Dave Grohl is Still Here

Dave Grohl.jpgAmid reports that Dave Grohl suffered a fatal accident, the one & only has stepped forth to say that he's still alive & well.

The Foo Fighters frontman's wife Jordyn started receiving condolence calls after several websites reported that Grohl had died.

Grohl says, "I got a phone message from a friend saying, 'Er, I guess . . . Jordyn, this is maybe for you. I'm so sorry to hear what happened.  They were leaving a message on my cell phone saying, 'I'm sorry Dave died.'"

"I guess I've finally graduated to the status of being an Internet rumor. It weirded me out a bit, but it's stupid. I'm like a cockroach. Don't worry. I'll be around for a long time."

And I do love cockroaches.

Elizabeth Taylor on the Brink of Death

Elizabeth Taylor Richard Burton.jpgHollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor, 74, is bedridden at her Bel Air home & is planning her funeral.  Taylor’s health has been deteriorating for some time and has worsened recently after her heart began to fail.  In the prime of her acting career she was famous for Cleopatra & Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Knowing she does not have much time left, the actress legend has begun planning her funeral & finalizing her will. Taylor is expected to be buried next to the love of her life, husband Richard Burton in Switzerland.  It is reported that Liz Taylor will be leaving the majority of her fortune to AIDS research.

A friend says, “Liz is inching closer to death every day and she knows it. It is not a pretty picture.  It is very sad, these days she is very depressed and has lost her lust for life, She’s finally given into the fact that she is living on borrowed time and it is very painful to see.”

And so the two will be reunited & leave us forever, or at least that’s how I’d like to think of it.

No True Clues In Penn Autopsy

Chris Penn.jpgThe sudden death of Chris Penn, the younger brother of fellow actor Sean Penn, was ruled accidental Monday by coroners who said he had an enlarged heart and had taken multiple medications including “promethazine with codeine… a highly addictive prescription cough syrup.”  It was widely know that Penn struggled with drug abuse and many speculated on what would be the cause of his untimely death.

Penn was found dead at his condo in late January.  He weighed more than 300 pounds at the time of his death, which probably didn’t help matters.  Like Val Kilmer, we watched Penn grow sideways; from the early stocky days with Reservoir Dogs as Nice Guy Eddie to the chunkier Penn we saw in the 2004 release Starsky & Hutch.

Chris Penn was an actor who specialized in blue-collar tough guy roles but his career was overshadowed by his brother’s career who won a Best Actor Oscar in 2003 for his role in Mystic River- which I still can’t figure out.  Sean Penn issued a statement last month asking for privacy following the sudden death and the family has made little comment since.

Some highlights on Chris Penn’s life:
