Some jokes fell flat, and others left you kind of mortified. “Did she just say that? On national TV?”

A lot of it had to do with Jane Lynch, an odd choice for Emmy host, and who apparently has the social graces of her TV character. Take, for example, her cutting response to Ricky Gervais: “Someone didn’t get enough hugs from Mommy and somehow it’s Hollywood’s fault.” Yeah, uhm… cut to commercial!

And when Julie Bowen walked away with the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress, you don’t think she could have just said: “Congratulations.” No, she had to say: “If I didn’t have to be here, I’d be home eating a tub of turkey meatballs in the dark.” You got the odd feeling that she meant it, and you could hear the nervous laughter in the hall.

But there were also a lot of other horrible moments, like the dreadful a capella rendition of “Hallelujah” played for the In Memoriam Tribute. Really, those celebs deserved a better send-off. And what was with LL Cool J and the Emmytones? (Note: the Emmytones were one loooong awkward moment. Whose brilliant idea was that?)

No surprise there. Glee took home the award for best musical or comedy television series, beating veteran shows as The Office, 30 Rock, and Entourage at the recent Golden Globe Awards.

Although the hit Fox show bagged the biggest award that night, it didn’t win three other awards that its cast members were nominated for. Leah Michele, who was nominated as best actress in a musical or comedy series lost to Toni Colette from The United States of Tara. Jane Lynch, who was nominated as best supporting actress, lost to Chloe Sevigny of Big Love. Matthew Morrison lost the best actor award to Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock.

“Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press and Miss Barbara Streisand,” said Glee creator Ryan Murphy in his acceptance speech, with the cast celebrating behind him. “We would like to thank all the wonderful people who actually thought a musical would work on primetime television.”

Congratulations, Gleeks!
