Tune in to American Idol tonight to watch a teenager give music advice to a bunch of twenty-somethings.

The top 11 finalists—Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Katie Stevens, and Tim Urban—will sing Billboard No. 1 hits for tonight’s showcase.

To help improve their performances, their guest mentor is none other than teen sensation Miley Cyrus. How weird is it to have a 17-year-old coach you on your voice pitch and singing style? Well, she is the youngest-ever multi-platinum recording artist to have four No. 1 albums in less than three years, so there may be a few tips to learn from the Disney pop princess.

He doesn’t want to be just a guest judge a la Victoria Beckham or Katy Perry. Perez Hilton wants to be the next American Idol judge (insert hand-clapping SFX here)! There will be an empty seat after this season, with Simon Cowell’s resignation as the iconic judge. Among all the names vying for the job, it seems like Perez Hilton is gaining a huge following.

His friends at Funny Or Die even helped him create this campaign video. “America needs something new—me as the next judge on American Idol!” he said in the hilarious video. “My track record for judging others is unmatched, plus I have all the qualities of past and present judges!”

No matter how “different” they try to make each season look, American Idol’s cliché characters never cease to pop out. There’s the dramatic hopeful, the single parent, the odd or quirky character, the rockstar wannabe, the past Idol lookalikes, the young prodigy, the underdog… and the list goes on. But we AI fans don’t care. We eat up the show like pudding. We love every cliché, drama, and suspense. We love to hate certain judges, and then feel warm inside when another judge says what’s on your mind.

Now that American Idol 9 has finally picked their top 24 contestants, we’re off to the juicy part of the show—the part where we get to watch people sing and critique them like we’re actually one of the judges.

Idol’s 9th Life Takes New Twists

America’s number one TV show, American Idol began its ninth season last Tuesday, and three notable changes have gotten everyone talking.

1. Paula’s out. She left the show before the ninth season began, sighting “contract negotiation problems.” Let me refer to that old saying, “You never really know what you got ‘til it’s gone” or something like that. We miss Paula Abdul’s good-hearted opinions and unintentional comic relief that Kara DioGuardi could never provide.

2. Ellen’s in. The talk show host is the official replacement of Paula, and although she has no background whatsoever in music (except maybe for her regular dance routines on her talk show), Ellen Degeneres promises to give “a layman’s point of view to the show.” It was disappointing though that she wasn’t part of the panel of judges during the initial audition rounds. Instead, guest judges such as Mary J. Blige, Shania Twain, Victoria Beckham, Neil Patrick Harris, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, and Katy Perry took the fourth seat.

3. Simon’s leaving. Yes, the infamous AI judge is taking a bow after this season to focus on the American version of X-Factor. Simon Cowell created the popular talent show for Britain, and now he’s taking it to the US. Simon will be busy producing and judging X-Factor for Fox in 2011. “I wanted to do something different,” he said. “I wanted a new challenge.” Will AI ever find a suitable replacement for the brutally honest judge? I doubt it. Other copycat reality talent shows have tried and failed.

Remember American Idol season 7’s dreadlocked heartthrob Jason Castro? The 22-year-old happily tweeted just 14 hours ago: “Yesterday I married the girl of my dreams… It couldn’t have been more perfect! Now, honeymoooon!!!”

Jason wed girlfriend Mandy Mayhall in his hometown near Dallas, Texas. Tweets from guests and the groom himself confirmed details of the ceremony as well as Jason’s bachelor party.

The singer/songwriter’s The Love Uncompromised EP (Atlantic Records) will be digitally released on January 12, followed by a full-length album in spring. He will also begin a tour later this month.

Couldn’t he have waited for his album and music career to kick off before walking down the aisle?
